Year of Pigs Wins Top Honor

Indiana Pork is proud to announce that the Indiana State Fair - Year of Pigs Presented by Indiana Pork Farmers campaign won the top honor of Judges Choice at the International Association of Fairs and Exhibitions conference this month. Cindy Hoye and Margaret Davidson from the Indiana State Fair Commission presented the award to the Indiana Pork Board of Directors on December 14.


The campaign was chosen for its creativity in marketing an agricultural product to consumers before and during the fair.

TOPIGS Genetics in the Most Northern Pig Farm in the World

On the 1 December 2010, a batch of Tempo boars was delivered to the Prigorodnyi farm in the region of Murmansk in Russia. This farm is without any doubt the most northern professional pig farm in the world.


The Prigorodnyi farm has experience with Tempo boars. The first boars arrived in 2008 on the farm. The boars have proved them at the professional pig farm closest to the North Pole, better carcass quality and vitality of the piglets were part of the strongest points that convinced the management of the farm to keep on using Tempo boars. The offspring have a strong appetite, high growth rate and good meat quality, benefits that are welcome up north.

Hinode Bussan agent for TOPIGS in Japan

Hinode Bussan has been appointed as agent for TOPIGS in Japan. This alliance between TOPIGS and Hindode Bussan will make TOPIGS genetics and technology available to the Japanese market. The TOPIGS InGene program will also be used to assist Hinode Bussan’s customers with closed herd genetic programmes.


Modern, forward looking Japanese pig producers are aware of the need to reduce production costs by improving productivity while at the same time maintaining or even improving the premium quality of Japanese produced pork. This new agreement will contribute to this objective by connecting the Japanese pig industry to TOPIGS’ worldwide breeding programme that is supported by TOPIGS’ groundbreaking R&D programme.

ISO STANDARDS PROJECTS ANNOUNCED FOR SAFETY SYMBOLS

ST JOSEPH, MICHIGAN — The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announces the approval by members of the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) of two new projects to develop international standards for cautionary signs used on slow-moving vehicles.


The proposed standards would provide specifications for the design and display of the slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblem and the speed-identification symbol (SIS).


The SMV standard would establish the emblem as an international symbol for slow-moving machines operated on public roads. The emblem has been familiar in the US since its adoption by ASAE (now ASABE) in 1966. Although used primarily on agricultural field equipment, it would also be applied to other machines or vehicles that travel at speeds up to 65 km/h.

L.B. WHITE COMPANY, INC ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF COMPANY

ONALASKA, WI, December 8, 2010

L.B. White Company, Inc. announces that it has been acquired by a group consisting of Jeff Diermeier, Rick Diermeier and Kevin Gagermeier. This acquisition includes L.B. White, PSI Heating Systems and two sister companies that make up Hospitality International, LLC; La Crosse and Carroll Chair Company.


Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Rick Diermeier is and has served as the company’s President and COO since 2004 and Kevin Gagermeier is and has served as Chief Financial Officer since 2007. Jeff Diermeier is the company’s new Chairman and is a private investor who was the former Chief Executive Officer of the CFA Institute headquartered in Charlottesville, VA and Chief Investment Officer of UBS Global Asset Management in Chicago, IL. He currently sits on a number of boards including the University of Wisconsin Foundation, Janus Capital Group and the Financial Accounting Foundation.

National Ag Day Essay Contest Announces February 4 Deadline

Students may submit written essay or video on 2011 theme:

“American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.”


OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (Dec. 7, 2010) - The Agriculture Council of America (ACA) calls on ninth- to 12th-grade students to submit an original, 450-word essay or a two-minute video essay about the importance of agriculture. This year’s theme is “American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.” and the deadline is Feb. 4, 2011. The ACA asks teachers and parents to encourage student participation.


The theme - “American Agriculture: Your Food. Your Farmer.” - presents an opportunity for students to address how the agriculture industry continues to feed a growing population. Entrants may choose to either write an essay or create a video that acknowledges the many ways today’s growers are providing a safe, stable food supply and sustaining the significant role agriculture plays in everyday life.

Alltech Vice President Recognized for Achievement
